That which makes you stronger!

Vacation was great! Had such a good time visiting with old friends and soaking up the island vibe! I pretty much forgot about my lump!

I would like to thank everyone so much for all your thoughts, emails, and calls. It's so nice to hear and feel everyone's positive energy!

Back to reality! One more day of work, then on Tuesday I go in for a pre-admission appointment for my surgery on Friday. All I know about the surgery so far is that they will be doing a lumpectomy and sentinal node biopsy and a possible axillary node dissection. They will just take out the lump + a bit around it to leave a clear margin and a sample of lymphnodes. While I am still under..they will do a quick test to see if the cancer has spread and take out more if needed.

They will do more lab work on the removed tissue after the surgery to determine what the next steps will be as far as treatment (chemo, radiation). The oncologist will decide on the treatment and I will meet with him/her in the near future I'm sure.

So, I am posting a video that I came across on Facebook that I really related to. It means so many things really..but the reason I am posting it is because naturally we do not wish to see our loved ones go through rough times. I believe that all that worry, dread, and anxiety should rather be channeled into the strength and growth that will blossom out of the tough patch. Sometimes, whether it's voluntary or not, you have to experience things that aren't necessarily pleasant, but force you to accept and grow. You can reluctantly accept them or welcome them as a challenge and adventure.

  2. Laura - as always our thoughts and prayers are with you. I think Susie is going to get her own login and post some stuff for you. :-) Anyway, it sounds like your procedure is a lot like hers was. She is now an 11 year survivor and I do know that staying focused and positive really helped her. I also believe that we became a stronger couple because of it. That's one of the positive aspects we encountered. So, hang in there and thanks so much for writing the blog!! Mike

  3. Hey there Laura,

Like my honey said, hang in there, and like you said, we grow and become stronger and wiser from the struggles of life. Also, it really does sound like your procedure will be a lot like the one I had, although they take a lot fewer lymph nodes now than they did 10 years ago. Yay for medical progress! The lumpectomy really wasn't that bad at all, I went back to work the next day (although I don't think I work as hard at my job as you do at yours ;-)
    Take care, luv ya, Susie

  4. Laura-

I will keep you and Chris in my thoughts to help you get through the week. I know you will become a stronger person than you are now once you are done showing cancer who is boss. You will use this as a stepping stone to help someone else that will end up walking in your same path. I know all of this because I know you. I admire the way you can put a positive spin on any situation you are in, and you learn how to make the best of everything.

It sounds like your surgery is going to be the same as the one my sister had. She has bounced back and feels better than ever. Her hair is growing back full and curly and today she came back from her 6 month check up with a clean bill of health.

I wish you all the best for your surgery and remember CHICKS RULE!!

  6. Laura, I really enjoyed your video. Sandy and I viewed it together when she was here...

It seams every day I keep thinking about September 11th. I know you will be okay...but I can't help holding my breath until it's over..

    So hurry up....I'm turning blue..

We all will be there in the operating room when you go through your surgery....keeping our eyes on the doctors to make sure they don't take any more than necessary.

    Love you gobs, Carol
